In honor of School Board Recognition Month, the JISD Fine Arts Department has been selected again this year to decorate the Board’s meeting room. When these meetings occur, the first thing people will see is the large, elaborate wall filled with masterworks of art from students from all over the district.
According to TASB.org, “School boards oversee the operation of local public schools and work to ensure that students are getting a high-quality education. School Board Recognition Month is an opportunity to show trustees how much we appreciate their work, leadership, and commitment to improving our schools.”
The trustees’ hard work pays off for all of the schools within the JISD and taking a month to recognize them is extremely important.
This special display will be showcasing art pieces that resonate with this year’s theme: “Leaders of Tomorrow’s Texas,” with each teacher picking eight to ten pieces of art from their most exceptional students. All grades from Pre-K to 12 get to have a little part of them in the School Board’s meeting room. The Fine Arts teachers get to decide which pieces go on the wall, creating closer bonds and spending more time with like-minded individuals to share ideas.
“It is an amazing opportunity to share like-minded and creative approaches to different things, whether it’s dealing with students or things that we do for classroom management,” shared Art teacher, Melissa Stewart.
Teachers have been planning since November to combine new and old artwork with the theme. Together, the teachers took two days off of school to work on picking pieces that would fit best and where and how to place them.
Alongside teachers, the exceptional art students have been hard at work, creating pieces or gathering old ones, to show appreciation. The main segment of the wall is a depiction of Texas and its different regions. Students were picked to create a portion of it and to draw a representation of that region. Each student got to explore different media and venture out into new ideas. Taking the time to make a beautiful work of art isn’t easy but showing appreciation for trustees this month is.
Junior, Jadyn Russell explained, “Going into the project I was expecting to draw cactus, cowboys and horses, but my teacher influenced me to do the Big Bend scenery, which was an amazing idea.” Russell also added, “I put so much detail into each piece of my art and I feel that my attention to detail makes my art stand out.”
The mural will be displayed all year to be admired by all guests who attend a meeting. Not only do the pieces acknowledge our leaders but they shed light on the amazing artists in Judson ISD.
