For the last few months, the staff has lamented the exit of Ms. Stacey Constantino, the former teacher of Intro to Journalism, Yearbook, Newspaper and Commercial Photography. Constantino left VMHS for a new chapter as part of UTSA’s Student Affairs Communication Office.
Constantino worked for VMHS for eight and a half years. She began as a substitute, then a library clerk, and graduated to a certified teacher, sharing her passion as the journalism, yearbook and newspaper advisor. Many can say that she was outgoing, spontaneous, and determined to do her job. She taught the staff responsibility and independence in publishing their own stories and making the calls to interview someone if needed. With her, the staff were able to take many field trips and competed in UIL events to gain more knowledge and skills on headline, feature, heading, news, editorial and caption writing.
The newspaper first transitioned to having substitutes fill the teacher opening and then making the acquaintance of Mr. James Jolly, the JV Secondary Defensive Football coach, who luckily has previously taught journalism. He took over until after the winter break when Mr. Chad Shugart, the head Senior advisor & sponsor, media coach and government teacher, stepped in to head the newspaper’s new era.
The Voice will soon be replaced with a new moniker as additional changes unfold. The voice will be renamed ‘Red, White and News.” The new title projects pride in our school colors while maintaining the connection to our purpose of disseminating the news to our readership. The staff looks forward to the new and exciting things to come, which include moving from an offshoot of journalism to a member of the VMHS media program as its print division. The Red, White and News staff is eager to see its evolution.
