Inspiring innovation, Building the future:
Veterans Memorial High School hums with excitement as students gather around the table of tools, gears, and circuits. The school’s new Robotics Club is officially up and running, and its members are brimming with enthusiasm, big ideas, and the determination to build something extraordinary. Founded just a few months ago, the club is already making waves in the community. It’s a place where students from all grade levels come together to learn, create, and explore the limitless possibilities of robotics. “We’ve got a fresh start, and the sky’s the limit,” says the club president and junior Emma Martinez. “This is a chance for us to make our mark.”
Starting from Scratch
The Robotics Club was the vision of councilor and STEM enthusiast Mrs.Jennifer Rendon, who wanted to provide students with hands-on learning experience in engineering and problem solving. “Robotics isn’t just about building machines; it;s about teamwork, creativity, and thinking critically to solve challenges,” says Rendon. With no prior history in robotics competitions, the club is starting from the ground up. Their first mission? Building a robot capable for completing basic tasks to prepare for future competitive events, such as the First Robotics Competition (FRC) or VEX robotics. “We’re taking it step by step,” says sophomore tech lead Jacob. “Right now, we’re learning the basics: how motors work, how to program sensors, and how to troubleshoot problems.Every small success feels like a huge win.”
A Community Effort
The club’s early days have been a community effort. Local businesses and parents have donated materials, and the school has provided funding for basic tools and equipment. “It’s inspiring to see everyone rallying around us,”says freshman member Sofia perez. “It makes us feel like what we’re doing really matters.” The students have also been connecting with other robotics teams in the region, seeking mentorship and advice.”It’s been amazing to learn from teams that have already completed,” Says Martinez. “They’ve shown us what’s possible and encouraging us to dream big,”
Goals for the Future
While the club is focused on learning and building this year, their long-term goal is to compete at regionals within the next two seasons. “We know we’re starting small, but we have big aspirations,” says Rendon. “We’re not just building a robot; we’re building a foundation for Future Patriots to thrive in STEM.” The club also hopes to inspire the school community by hosting robotics demonstrations and workshops. “We want to show everyone that robotics is for everyone,” says Perez. “Whether you’re into coding, designing, or just curious, there’s a place for you here.”
Call For Support
As a new club, the Robotics team faces challenges, particularly when it comes to resources. They’re actively seeking sponsorships and donations to help fund materials, competition fees, and travel expenses for future events. “Every contribution helps us take one step closer to making our dreams a reality,” says Rendon.
Join the Movement
The Veterans Memorial High School Robotics Club may be new, but they’re filled with passion, ambition, and the spirit of innovation. Whether they’re designing their first robot or tackling future competitions, these students are proving that even the biggest journeys start with a single step. Stay tuned as the Robotics Club continues to grow, and watch as they transform their vision into reality- one bolt at a time.
