The Patriot Nation joins forces to promote drug awareness and prevention during the annual Red Ribbon Week, a nationwide campaign to empower young teens to make informed choices. Red Ribbon Week lasted from Oct. 23 through the 31, during which students participate in theme days, educational assemblies and awareness campaigns.
VMHS aims to make Red Ribbon Week fun and interactive for all students, although roadblocks are sometimes met, especially within a high school. The students’ views are the most difficult challenges in promoting drug prevention in high school.
“Many students still do not see the dangers or have an ‘it can’t happen to me’ perspective,” said counselor Angela Allen.
“This year’s campaign was hosted for all four grade levels. We provided information about fentanyl, specifically sharing stories of actual students that have been affected, including a VMHS student who lost their life,” said Allen.
Kicking off the week with a new daily theme promoting drug awareness. The school community is coming together under a common goal: to foster healthy choices and equip students with the knowledge they need to say no to drugs, emphasizing that only as a team can the Patriot Nation build the foundation of a drug-free community.
A Colorful Start: Red Out Monday
The festivities began on Monday with “Red Out Day,” when students were encouraged to wear red attire, symbolizing their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. The school was filled with kids who brought their suicide prevention cheer, wearing red hats, shirts and accessories. In addition to the sea of red, all counselors provided facts about drug prevention and resources for students who may need support.
Nostalgia Takes Center Stage: 2000s Day.
Tuesday brought a blast from the past with “2000s Day”. Students and staff embraced the early 2000s fashion trends, sporting cargo pants, butterfly clips and vibrant graphic tees.
Alongside the nostalgic outfits, special lunchtime activities took place, including discussing the long-term effects of drug usage.
Double The Fun: Twin Day on Wednesday
Wednesday was announced as “Twin Day,” during which students partnered up to dress alike in creative and quirky outfits. This day encouraged friendship and camaraderie, promoting the idea of supporting one another in the fight against drugs.
Family Vibes: BBQ Dad and Soccer Mom Thursday-
On Thursday, the school took a lighter approach with “BBQ Dad and Soccer Mom Day. ” Students embraced the family-friendly theme, donning aprons, sun hats and the iconic attire of parents everywhere.
Informative counselor tables were set up, where students could engage with peer leaders and health advocates about the risks associated with drug use.
Chasing Dreams: Childhood dream job Friday-
The week culminated on Friday with “Childhood Dream Job Day”. Students arrived dressed as their future selves, showcasing professions from doctors to scientists and everything in between. The event provided an opportunity for students to articulate their dreams and aspirations, highlighting the message that achieving these goals is best supported by healthy choices.
As Red Ribbon Week came to a close, the impact of the events was evident.
Through creativity, camaraderie, and conversation, students are empowered to make informed choices and oppose drug use. This vibrant theme week fortified the school’s commitment to fostering a proactive attitude toward health and wellness, leaving lasting impressions that go beyond the festivities. With each colorful outfit and thoughtful discussion, the message remains clear: Together, Patriot Nation can make a difference.
