Red Ribbon week, launched by Nancy Reagan in 1985 to bring awareness to preventing drug abuse, has been a part of school traditions for years.
The Heart Club and STUCO kicked off Red Ribbon Week during all four lunches Nov. 25, performing songs in the courtyard and passing out bracelets in return for pledging. All students have to do to pledge is write their name on a small card promising to stay free from drugs and alcohol and in return, they will earn a red bracelet.
Heart Club president Simone Greene and member Josie Salazar, both juniors, spent most of the lunch going table to table asking students to participate in Red Ribbon Week.
STUCO also participated in Red Ribbon Week by setting up tables and activities like ping pong. They also created a large paper ribbon in the courtyard for students to sign once they pledged.
Mariachi also played some tunes, spreading awareness as they performed in the courtyard for Suicide Prevention Week.
